The MAN EATER

Ramanuja a devotee of Lord Ram sold flowers and baskets to make his livelihood in a small village. He was one among the rare men who never bothered about money. He used to sell flowers and baskets to a much lower rate than its worth. Once he gets the money that is required for the days food, he would give aways the remaining for free. His wife always complained on his inability to make money.

Ramanuja’s usual routine was to go to the forest to collect some flowers for selling and wood for household purpose. One day when he entered the forest he found a box filled with gold, silver, ruby, diamond etc.,. Ramanuja dropped everything that he had in his hand and started running towards his village shouting “MAN EATER!!! MAN EATER”.

Hearing this two nomads who were crossing the village feared to enter the forest. As they had no other path to reach the next village, they walked towards the forest. When they entered they saw this big box of priceless things. Both thought that Ramanuja was a fool. The two entered into an agreement of splitting the things in the box among them. They decided to stay in an ashram that night and split the contents of the box in the morning before leaving in their own path. One man though “why should i give him a share???? I found it and so its all mine. I will eliminate him before tomorrow morning and take the whole box for myself”. The other man …. no exception he too thought the same. Both of then offered poisoned milk to each other without realizing that theirs were also poisoned. The next day morning the MAN EATER was still lying there ready to kill many like the two bodies which lay next to it.

Any material that we sense through the 5 senses are like MAN EATER. They all will destroy us if we cling to it. Its better now to realize its a MAN EATER like Ramajuna than not realizing it at all like the nomads.

All these material possession are bound by time…. be it material that we touch or work that we do or people whom we love or the things we see or feel or even our body. They all will be destroyed one day. You do not possess control over anything. So get hold of the one that is permanent… the one that cannot be bound by space and time.

On the eve of new year….. Nancy woke up early in the morning and found herself fighting with her husband. This was their usual routine. Not a single day passed for them without fighting against each other. Nancy was shortempered. It was Antony’s patience towards her made life  less difficult. The fight continued for the whole day when at last the time came for them to leave to the  midnight mass at their local church. Nancy fetched her 3 yr old kid watching their fight with a smile to get her dressed. When they got ready both their faces looked like dynamites which were ready to explode any moment. They got into the car and slammed the car door with full anger. On the way no one spoke a word and when they reached the church they both got down and headed in a different direction. Ten minutes before the new year arrival Antony joined Nancy in the prayer hall, even though they dint seem to have calm down. The New year arrived. They prayed, wished each other for name sake and left home without the fire of fight being put off.

Four days later Nancy was soaking all the dress used during the week for washing. She checked the pocket in the shirts as she usually did before soaking. To her surprise she found a Laminated Rs. 10 note, neatly folded into one of his shirt inner pockets. She wondered why this Rs. 10 was preserved. She went near Antony who was playing with the kid. When she asked, he said “Don’t you remember…. On the new year they passed a plate to put our contribution. You gave me this Rs.10 note to put it in the plate, but I preserved it as this was the first thing that you gave to me on this new year”. Nancy was almost in tears …..
